Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental difference that affects social communication, sensory processing, and flexibility of thinking. It’s called a “spectrum” because it looks different from person to person — some students need more support with social interaction, others with sensory regulation, and many bring real strengths in focus, memory, or pattern recognition alongside their challenges.

How Porter Academy Addresses Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Social Thinking, incorporated by every teacher, builds the social-cognitive skills students need to navigate group settings, using concrete, child-friendly concepts (see Our Approach for more on this framework)
  • A dedicated Social Skills class, specialist-led and in small groups, gives direct, explicit instruction in these same skills
  • Zones of Regulation and Occupational Therapy, including our on-campus sensory gym, directly support the sensory processing and self-regulation needs common with ASD
  • Predictable daily structure and routines, with clear expectations at every step of the day
  • Small, developmentally-grouped homerooms reduce the overwhelm of a large, fast-moving classroom
  • A positive-reinforcement culture, rather than one built around correcting behavior, supports confidence and reduces the anxiety that can come with social demands
  • Integrated therapies — Music, Art, and PE — offer additional avenues for regulation, connection, and expression beyond verbal communication
