Art

Overview

Every Porter Academy student participates in Art class twice a week. The program offers a wide range of creative experiences, structured to build self-expression and problem-solving skills while introducing students to the art and artists of many cultures. Students work across both two- and three-dimensional media, including oil and soft pastels, charcoal, Sharpie, clay, and paper.

How It’s Structured

Art class balances two kinds of projects: structured, technique-oriented assignments that build specific skills, and more open-ended projects that give students room to make their own creative choices. That balance lets every student build real technical ability while still having space to express themselves.

What It Builds

  • Self-expression — students explore ideas and emotions through multiple media, finding the ones that resonate most with them
  • Problem-solving — working with different materials and techniques requires ongoing creative decision-making
  • Social skills — students practice compromise and collaboration, and learn to let go of perfectionism, as they work alongside peers
  • Cultural awareness — exposure to art and artists from many cultures broadens students’ perspective beyond the classroom
  • Confidence — projects are adjusted to fit each student’s learning style and ability, so every student can feel genuinely good about what they create.
