At Porter Academy, we work with each family to meet every child where they are — academically, developmentally, socially, and emotionally. To make sure each student gets the attention and care they deserve, we’ve built a staff of skilled, dedicated teachers and therapists who treat students with respect and compassion. Our homerooms are capped at 12 students, with academic instruction delivered in small groups of 8 or fewer, so students and teachers can build real relationships and communicate closely. Our teachers are all committed to giving each child a real opportunity to succeed. We recognize every child is unique in their talents, abilities, and challenges, and we work creatively to help them excel — in the classroom and beyond.

Our History

In 2000, Claudia Porter — an educator and speech-language pathologist — founded The Porter School with the support of Muriel Lange, a parent and math teacher, to create an environment where children with learning differences could succeed both academically and socially. The school opened with 16 students in grades 1–3, meeting in borrowed church space, and grew steadily by word of mouth and referrals from psychologists.

In 2002, the school moved into its permanent home in Roswell, Georgia, and in 2007 was renamed Porter Academy. Over the years that followed, the school expanded to serve Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade — the range it proudly serves today.

Claudia’s daughter, who joined the school as its Occupational Therapist in 2004, became Head of School in 2016 and continues to lead Porter Academy today in that dual role. Claudia Porter remained on staff as Speech Therapist until her retirement in 2019; her legacy lives on through the Claudia Porter Scholarship Fund.
